Crafty Robots
In this hands-on class, students explore what robots are, how they move and what makes them come to life, without any coding. We build moving robots using simple materials like paper, straws and toothpicks, alongside more complex components such as motors and batteries. Students examine existing robot designs and discussed what makes a robot work well (or not!). Through hands-on experimentation with motion, mechanisms and robot aesthetics, students design and build original robots of their own.
Maker Machines
Students explore how to use a variety of digital fabrication machines commonly found in fab labs and makerspaces. Through hands-on demo, they learn to use software tools such as Tinkercad and Inkscape to create original (and realistic) designs for the laser cutter, 3D printer, and vinyl cutting machines and even visit active fabrication and lab spaces around campus. Students explore design thinking, material choices, and creative experimentation while using professional-grade tools in a supportive, beginner-friendly environment. Students leave the week with multiple custom-made objects and a strong understanding of what happens in a makerspace.
